Get your nails done using organic nail products only at Maria Curau, a hidden gem in Pererenan...

Usually, when I go to a nail bar I can’t stop smiling after my nail art is done. But at Maria Curau, they take it to another level. Even before entering the salon, I have already found joy and feel the positive energy. Nestled in the picturesque rice fields in Pererenan in North Kuta, Maria Curau is a distinct nail spa that highlights vegan products which makes it different from other nail spas in Bali. I mean, who would have thought that nail polish and foot scrub could be vegan?

    Toxic-Free
The Merriam-Webster dictionary website defines vegan as “a strict vegetarian who consumes no animal food or dairy products”. This means Maria Curau only uses plant-based products, from nail polish to essential oil, foot scrub, aromatherapy and lotion, with no made-made chemicals. All of these products are made of natural ingredients from various plants – Maria Curau has selections of nail polish that come in various colors derived from plants.

When I met Tatiana, the founder of Maria Curau, she told me that cosmetics, especially nail cosmetics, have always been one of her interests. But at the same time, she knows that nail products – or other spa products, for that matter – often contain five of the most toxic ingredients that may cause serious health problems like cancer, asthma and even more deadly effects. As a health enthusiast herself, she came up with the idea to open a spa that concentrates on healthy nail treatments. Maria translated that idea. Using all-organic products most of which are homemade and naturally-processed, this spa proudly claims not to use any chemical preservatives, petrochemicals and other ingredients that could harm our body.

    It’s A Lux!
Bright, clean, vibrant and relaxing – that was my first impression upon entering this nail spa. Two white bohemian hammocks caught my eye on my first step into the spa, and it was the green plants as well as the colorful cushion, plush sofas, attractive artwork and big windows that let the sunshine in that made me feel even more peaceful and happy. As if that’s not enough, Maria Curau also has cozy loungers overlook the view of the rice fields – I’m sure whoever get pampered on those loungers will feel blessed to know that a heavenly place like this exists on the island!

After sipping their homemade kombucha for refreshment, I opted for their Luxe treatment as suggested by Tatiana. Luxe is the spa’s manicure and pedicure signature treatment that started with inhaling some cajuput oil that made me feel relax, followed by soaking my hands and feet in copper bowls that are filled with coconut milk, sea salt and lavender oil. The coconut milk benefited my dry hands and feet because it is actually a natural moisturizer, while lavender oil is a natural antiseptic. The combination of the two successfully soothed my dry skin. Afterwards, the therapist carefully groomed my cuticles, and once done, she massaged my hands and arms, while another therapist joined her to massage my feet and legs with coconut scrub. As a fan of coconut, I assured myself to come back for another Luxe treatment someday.

When I thought the treatment was about to end, one of the therapists washed my hands and feet, and began to apply organic coconut oil and gave me another gentle massage. She then wrapped my feet with towels and continued to massage them. If other spa’s manicure and pedicure sessions only involve foot wash and nail treatment, Maria Curau offers a whole package that consists of much more. My most favorite part is when they started to apply Kester Black nail polish. Kester Black is a cruelty-free nail polish that has earned an accreditation from Choose Cruelty Free and Vegan Society. This means that the nail polish is purely made from plants. It took quite a long time to dry my nails though, but the wait was well worth it because the polish felt natural and from the aroma I could tell it contains no chemical.

This non-toxic spa has its own slogan: ’Art, Social, Beauty’. ’Beauty’ is applied with their non-toxic treatments, while ’Art’ is displayed on one of the spa’s corners where adorable products such as summer headbands and bikinis are on offer. And ’Social’ is applied in another corner that showcases handmade dolls made by local Balinese women – a purchase of the dolls is to support Bumi Sehat Foundation. Last but not least, almost every month, Maria Curau holds a charity event where everyone is invited to join.
