    Summer in Seminyak

      30-6-2017
Indulge in delicious food at these four restaurants, the new talk of the town...

Summer is here and Bali will soon be flocked by holidaymakers from all corners of the world. And Seminyak, as the hippest and most sought-after enclave of southwestern Bali, has several cool new spots for the waves of people to see and be seen at. Here are the top four spots that you have to visit on this holiday season.

    Summer in Seminyak

    It’s a Pool Club!

Being the hippest area on this paradise island, Seminyak’s coastlines are filled with beach clubs already. So, when Mrs. Sippy – the popular, iconic bar and restaurant in Sydney’s Double Bay – opened its Bali branch with a pool club concept, it was truly a refreshing change in the scene.

Tucked away between Alila Seminyak and Potato Head Beach Club Bali, Mrs. Sippy makes up what it lacks in beach view with its laidback and warm atmosphere, an 800-square-meter saltwater pool and – the piéce de rèsistance – three diving platforms, all surrounded by the soft curves of its Mediterranean-style architecture, daybeds, cabanas, lush greenery and shady palm trees. Adding to its cool vibe is its menu which features a wide range of casual yet scrumptious Mediterranean-inspired treats and fruity libations.

Your perfect day under the Balinese sun at Mrs. Sippy should be complemented with their Charred Cauliflower salad, which is a refreshing combination of Swiss chard, raisins, salsa verde, walnuts and pecorino. Pair it with a plate of Butterfish Tartare from its Poolside Classic menu that consists of diced butterfish, shaved fennel and chilli topped with refreshing citrus dressing.

For your main course, place an order from their Grill menu – the 500-gram Grass Fed Beef T-Bone Steak is highly recommended as the meat is so delicate it will just melt in your mouth. For drinks, don’t miss their Crushed cocktails! Our favourite is their Mandarin Smash, a thirst-quenching concoction of smashed mandarin and ylang ylang infused with Ketel One Vodka, kalamansi, belimbing (starfruit) cordial and Massanez Triple Sec.

Mrs. Sippy also holds a list of fun events which you should keep an eye open for as they will surely be a hit this summer!

    Fun Dining

Sitting on Jalan Kayu Cendana in Seminyak lined with cosy little hangouts and eateries, is Bikini, which has been redefi ning the casual-chic dining concept in the area since its opening with fun, flirty and quirky twists. Run by the same people behind the BO$$ MAN, Expat and Sisterfields, Bikini is the new gem in the area’s vibrant culinary landscape.

Fusing the modern New York warehouse with the vibe of Miami’s beach party, Bikini presents a celebration of contrasts with its decadent and luxury dining experience in its playful ambiance. Flirt is the word that would come to mind as you step into the premise. The fun play of contrasts at Bikini doesn’t just end at its well-designed interior as it also extends to what they serve on the table.

“My vision for Bikini is to bring the highest quality of dining experience which you may get at a fine-dining restaurant, but make it accessible in a fun, party environment. We call it fun-dining,” claimed Bikini’s Creative Culinary Director Jethro Vincent.

Inspired by the island’s seasonal produce whilst also pushing diners to re-discover shared plate dining, Chef Jethro and his kitchen team have carefully crafted a plethora of inventive and whimsical gourmet creations that will make it hard to place an order as you’ll probably want to try every one of them. However, Chef Jethro makes it easier for you with a Feed Me option where he can send up to 15 dishes to your table for an ultimate Bikini experience.

One of the highlights from the Feed Me menu is their Foie Gras Parfait Cigar with quince, presented on a golden ashtray with bread and butter ash – which you can dab your foie gras into – served in an ashtray. Another star of the menu is Corn on Corn, a scrumptious dish of corn, popcorn, chipotle and manchego that gives an explosion of flavor in your mouth.

Don’t forget to order the Bikini’s Black Negroni cocktail, a classic negroni with a kick of strong espresso. This drink will elevate your summer nights in Seminyak!

    Meat Galore

Perched atop the Holy Crab restaurant on Jalan Petitenget, Betty Lou is the place to go for a real South American-style meat galore.

Adorned with white-coloured wooden furniture, high ceiling, an open kitchen and a combination of indoor and outdoor spaces, Betty Lou exudes a strong tropical-island- casual atmosphere that gives everyone a great feeling of easiness. This utterly chilled-out ambiance is also refl ected in their dishes. Offering authentic South American barbecue, this little eatery displays its delectable dishes in a rather non-chalant fashion.

Despite all of its effort to push the casual atmosphere, there is nothing easy about their way of preparing the food. Serving authentic South American barbecue requires an incredible amount of passion and dedication. The aptly named ‘low-n-slow’ method that the restaurant adopts involves long hours of cooking that takes up to 20 hours in a low-temperature smoker, which needs painstaking handling every few hours to ensure the meat is perfectly cooked. This cooking technique yields juicy results that no other method can deliver.

Try their Texas Style Wagyu Beef Brisket and huge 1.1-kilogram US-sourced St. Louis Pork Ribs, which are slow-smoked with wood for up to 18 hours. These beautiful tender cuts of meat will not only leave juicy fat dripping down your chin, but also instantly melt in your mouth – literally no chewing required. While you’re at it, place a side order of garlic-roasted mashed potato and their creamy mac and cheese. If you are not really into red meat, Betty Lou also presents a range of Southern-style comfort food like the Creamy Crawfish Spaghetti that is equally brilliant!

Pair your food with their refreshing Watermelon Hibiscus Tea Cooler. Better yet, just go straight to the signature cocktail – Watermelon and Passionfruit Mojito and (yes, we said ‘and’) Dry Smoked Rosemary Martini.

    Italian-Style

Bringing the chic atmosphere of the Italian Amalfi Coast and combining it with the unpretentious attitude of Bali, Da Maria – the brainchild of the famous restaurateurs Maurice Terzini and Adrian Reed of Motel Mexicola – presents an Osteria style Italian restaurant.

Designed by Roman architect Lazarini Pickering, Da Maria’s interior pays homage to the beautiful aesthetics of 1960’s Amalfi Coast courtyard with a fresh blue and white palette and bold geometric styling. The space is even more welcoming as the contemporary take on the classic is paired with typically Balinese greenery of rubber trees, cacti and passion fruit vines spiraling down the walls from the Roman Pantheon-inspired skylights that can either be opened or closed. As you step into the venue, you will be welcomed by a central bar and an expansive space extending to the back, casually portioned by white linen curtains.

Da Maria serves dishes that are as fun and accessible as the venue. “We are offering traditional Italian food, done correctly, in a modern environment without trying to reinvent the wheel,” said Chef Steven Skelly. Pizza becomes the star of the menu, because the chef together with Maurice have adopted the Neapolitan artisanal technique, where the pizza dough is fermented for 24 hours and cooked in Naples-inspired lava stone ovens. Another highlight is the Oreccheitte pasta served with spanner crab, fragrant zucchini flower and a dash of refreshing lemon.

As for the tipples, this hot new place presents libations that mostly incorporate the flavor profi le of Campari or Aperol blended with white spirits, local fruits and citrus – their classic Italian Negroni is not to be missed! Did we mention that Da Maria also has a fantastic weekly disco and pizza offer?
