I tried to keep my eyes open that night. I was so afraid of being late for the sunrise that I decided not to sleep at all. That day, my husband and I together with our two-year-old son prepared to start our adventure with Expedition Bali Volcano Tour & Sunrise Explorer to hike Mount Batur and see the sunrise. We had to leave our home in Denpasar at 2 a.m. for Kintamani and we could not be later than that because otherwise we wouldn’t have enough time to see the most-talked about sunrise view from Mount Batur.

We hit the road in the dark for almost one and a half hours from Denpasar to the meeting point at Toya Bungkah terminal in Kintamani. We finally met our guide and the team from Expedition Bali, the four-wheel-drive adventure tour operator. Under the beautiful starry night and the breezy mountain wind, we parked our car at the terminal and joined the Expedition Bali’s Land Rover semi-roadster to hike the mountain trails.

Our adventure finally began as our guide drove us to the gate of Bali’s UNESCO Global Geopark Network. Tall trees pleased our eyes, while the road was bumpy and rocky until we reached an uphill road – our guide, Bli Sadhu, said that we should be able to see the magnificent view of Lake Batur from where we were. However, the sky was still too dark and we could not see anything.

After about 20 minutes of driving, we arrived at the parking lot in front of Pura Batur complex where we started our hike to the top of the Mount Batur to see the sunrise. The area was still in a total darkness – all we could see was light beams from our flashlights. I was informed that the hike to the top of the mountain normally takes an hour. It was just enough for us to reach the top before the sun rises.

    The Hike
We took several breaks along our challenging hike but still managed to keep our spirits up for catching the sunrise. Surprisingly, there was a little food joint at our first stop where several groups of hiker sat, trying to catch their breaths while having some drinks before continuing their journey to the mountain top. The sky slowly got brighter with every minute and our group just didn’t want to miss the amazing sunrise moment. So, we continued on.

Bli Sadhu was on point in predicting the time. After one hour of what we considered to be the hardest climb of our lives (as we’re not really fond of hiking), we finally arrived at the top of the mountain. We lifted our faces and the view from the top instantly left us speechless. It was all worth the early drive from home and the sleepless night. From where we stood, we could see the tip of the then-erupting Mount Agung from afar and a silhouette of Bali’s third highest mountain, Mount Abang. We sat in silence while trying to let nature rule our mind, sight and hearing.

The sun was slowly shining higher and the clouds below us gradually disappeared. We could finally clearly see the panorama of our surroundings, including magnificent Lake Batur that Bli Sadhu mentioned earlier. When the air felt warmer, we took as many pictures as we could.

    The Prayers
I think that day was one of our luckiest. It was 8 a.m. sharp when we were still sitting at the top of the mountain and we could see some people wearing white outfits slowly moving in our direction. It turns out, that group of people came from Kintamani Village and they brought offerings to the temple that is perched on the top of the mountain – and we were sitting right next to the temple.

The area where we sat suddenly became more crowded. Hundreds of villagers wearing traditional Balinese outfit gathered, including children and toddlers. Every one of them climbed the rocky mountain slopes for one hour and did their prayers together on the mountain top.

We decided to wait for their ritual to finish as we seized this amazing moment in pictures. It was a mesmerizing experience for our little family. And I guess it is true what people say – the best view comes after the hardest climb indeed.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE HIKING IN MOUNT BATUR:
    • Wear your best hiking shoes as the trails are sloping.
    • Mind your steps as you will hike under minimal lighting.
    • For beginners like us, the trek can be challenging. But according to some of our friends who love hiking, Mount Batur has the friendliest path compared to other mountains in Bali.
