Get pampered with a deep-rooted Balinese treatment at Nusa Dua Spa, one of the Island’s spa pioneers...

Bali is indeed peppered with numerous spas that offer idyllic settings and tranquil vibes. But what is it that you are looking for in a spa treatment? This question just might arise when you arrive on the island and are in the mood for some pampering. But don’t worry as I have the answer for you. Nusa Dua Spa at Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa is an absolute heaven for either a newbie or a regular spa-goer. Local ingredients, experienced therapists who stick to traditional healing, and tropical yet alluring surroundings – the spa has them all.

Located next to the hotel’s gapura (gate), Nusa Dua Spa is a 20-year-old spa sanctuary that is complete with a 25-meter lap pool, a spa boutique, a spa café and a lush garden. Once you’ve arrived at the spa, the receptionist will greet you and offer you a selection of treatments that promise to bring a natural experience. Come in and feel nothing but the goodness of Balinese secret blends of nature, flowers, oils, spices, and herbs. Lay down and enjoy...

    The Princess Story
This is not a once-upon-a-time tale, but a story of the spa’s perfect mix of ingredients sourced from the island. But before the treatment begins, let’s sip a glass of lemongrass tea. Presented along with a frangipani flower, this welcome drink is extremely soothing. Tuck the frangipani behind your ear, and you are ready to be one of those Balinese women who worship traditional essences.

Nusa Dua Spa has a great list of spa treatments, but if you are not sure which one to choose, I would personally recommend the Balinese Massage, the treatment that I opted for during my visit after the receptionist told me that this ritual would smoothen my blood flow. Once I made my decision, a spa therapist came to escort me to a treatment room, a bright room for two that was complete with a bathtub, a shower, and a changing room.

The treatment began with a footbath. And as the therapist scrubbed and massaged my feet with apple-fermented soap and sea salt, she casually told me that she’s been working at the spa for 20 years and still going strong. With that information in my head, I couldn’t wait to be carried away by her gentle massage supplemented by the spa’s highly concentrated plant oils such as ylang-ylang, tangerine, jasmine, and lavender.

As a tribute to Bali’s ancient traditions, this 50-minute massage also uses the effleurage massage technique and thumb pressure in the tense spots. Revitalized and renewed are the right words to describe my post-treatment glow. But the treatment tale is still to be continued...

    That’s A Wrap
My spa journey continued with a special treatment that has been attracting tourists from across the globe since the Nusa Dua Spa opened its doors for the first time in 1996. Boreh is an assortment of Balinese herbs mashed and mixed in one container. Mind you, to make this mix is far from simple. Ni Ketut Danti, the hotel’s Assistant Spa Sales Manager, told me that it takes passionate hands to handpick the herbs and spices and an accurate feeling to mash them into a perfect boreh dough.

I really started to believe that only the Balinese could make this concoction. But before my mind wandered, my spa therapist started to spread the boreh paste all over my body. Made out of sandalwood, turmeric, coriander, galangal, rice, and brown rice, the boreh has such a comforting aroma that it almost made me fall asleep. But before that happened, the spa therapist wrapped me up tight with thick plastic covered by a sleeve of fabric and a towel.

The boreh paste worked its magic right after the towel was wrapped around my body. I could feel a warm sensation as the fragrant spices opened up my pores and helped ease my stiff muscles. Within approximately 40 minutes, the boreh wrap had softened my skin and increased my blood circulation. Near to the end of the treatment, the paste was cracking on my skin and my spa therapist began to unwrap my body. I could easily head to the shower room to clean myself, but what’s the use of a whirlpool if not to make the best of a boreh experience?
