My Signature Sandals
I was strolling around Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak for a window shopping on a beautiful Saturday when one of my sandal straps broke. It is always annoying when these things happen, yet I was pretty lucky as my eyes fell on an adorable-looking store on the opposite of Billabong (near La Favela), Baia Baia. Without thinking twice, I decided to pay a visit and looked for a new sandal. But when I entered the store, I realized that Baia Baia offers a different kind of shopping sensation.
Near the entrance, a round-shaped shelf stands displaying numerous of colorful straps. As I took a look around, one of their staff approached me, offering to help craft my own sandals. Turns out, Baia Baia offers a fun experience where customers can design their own pair of sandals (one pair is available at Rp. 179,000). From choosing the color of the rubber, the style of cutting and selecting beautiful charms to adorn the sandals – the decision is in the customer’s hands. ‘I guess window-shopping is out the window,’ I thought to myself as I just couldn’t resist to make my own pair of sandals.
Assisted by one of the staff, I started to channel my inner creativity. The first step was to choose the color of the rubber which ranges from black, dark blue, light blue, pink and more. I chose an orange rubber because orange tends to boost my mood. Then, the staff took me to the strap section filled with choices of colors and texture – they have the standard and dove straps. I chose a pair of transparent dark purple strap with glitter that I thought would perfectly match with the orange rubber. Afterwards, came what I think as the hardest part of designing my own sandals – choosing the charms.
Baia Baia presents a lot of charms as ornament to the sandals. With price ranging from around Rp. 30,000 to Rp. 200,000, the charms come with selections of design, from florals and butterflies for a sweet look to swords and skulls for an edgy style, as well as seahorses and starfish for a beach vibe. I took my time in selecting the charms – they were all so adorable, it was so hard to decide! After what seems to be the thousandth time of changing my mind (and I praised the staff for being really patient with me), I finally chose a silver strand of flower for my right sandal, and a colorful one for the left. Yes, the left sandal can be designed with different charm from the right – and that’s the fun!
Once I was sure with my final decision, the staff asked me one last question; the cutting style. Baia Baia offers two types of cutting; standard and slim – I opted the latter for a more feminine look. With a nod, he then took my rubber, straps and charms to the far end of the store to craft my sandals. Ten minutes later, voila! My new ‘signature’ sandals are ready to roll! And I was really happy with the result.
So now, whenever I need a pair of sandals to walk around the island, I know where to go. Aside from the DIY (do-it-yourself) sandals, Baia Baia also offers jelly sandals (Rp. 329,000), kid’s sandals and pouches – and yes, all of them can be adorned by beautiful charms as well.
