A former professional ski athlete becomes a personal coach. Rob Hourmont conducts Primal Health Coach at Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort...

Ever since he endured a serious knee injury in the ‘90s, International World Cup and Olympic Ski Race with the British Ski Team athlete Rob Hourmont had to retire from professional skiing and decided to become a Certified Primal Health Coach. At Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort, he conducts the island’s first ever Primal Health Coach sessions, a tailored workout class to burn fat, tone muscles, and achieve the best physical form in the midst of the resort’s tropical setting. Find out more about the program as Rob Hourmont (RH) shares his passion with Bali & Beyond (BB).

BB: What brought you to Bali after you retired from being a professional skier?
RH: I went to Bali 20 years ago, and from then on I had the dream of moving to Bali to live a better life. Once I became a Primal Health Coach, it all made sense. Bali was the logical place for me to develop my practice, focusing on healthy food, fitness, meditation, wellness, and creating a new wonderful lifestyle for myself, which I could pass on to as many families, friends and clients as possible. I want to help people get fit, healthy and happy.

BB: How did you start coaching at Anantara Uluwatu?
RH: I approached the Anantara Uluwatu and their Spa Director Dewi Febrianti Jackson. Ibu Dewi was very open and interested in my methods, so we agreed to bring the Primal Health Coaching method to the resort.

BB: Each person has different health conditions. How do you design a health program to meet their every need?
RH: The first step with every client is a one-on-one consultation, through a phone call or face to face meeting. This is essential as I need to evaluate their health, fitness levels, medical issues and goals they may have. I then design the approach, especially the nutrition and exercise around the client’s situation.

BB: Could you please explain the exercises you teach and their benefits?
RH: The most important thing about these exercises I teach is that they are safe. If done correctly, you cannot hurt yourself. The exercise routines work your whole body in one session, bring fast results and leave you with a lot more free time to enjoy life, as opposed to having to spend every day in the gym while not getting the desired results.

BB: What makes a Primal Lifestyle workout different from other workouts?
RH: There are two things that separate Primal workout routines from most other routines. First, it is simple to learn. Everybody can do these exercises everywhere without going to the gym, let alone being a member of a gym. Secondly, they are efficient and effective as they only need to be performed three times a week and take only 20 to 45 minutes, with huge benefits.

BB: How long does one program last?
RH: That’s a good question. This is not actually a program, this is a lifestyle. Once you embark on this journey and see how your body changes physically, how much more energy you have, and how much you feel better in body and mind, you will never want to go back. You will adopt this lifestyle and stay with it forever.

BB: The workout is followed by healthy food that you cook. Could you please explain what kind of food you create and how that menu benefi ts our health?
RH: I cook for clients when I train them one on one. I do this in the beginning for the client to see hands on what to make and how to cook or prepare the food, especially how to source the food. That’s the key. It’s essential to source or buy healthy food, such as using meat from animals that have been raised naturally or organically with no antibiotics, growth hormones or pesticides in their diets, and organic vegetables. It’s also important that the animals have been able to eat healthily themselves and lived a free life. This provides for healthy and nourishing meat produce.

We basically eat meat, fish, fowl, a lot of vegetables, a lot of eggs, avocados, nuts and seeds, as well as natural coconut products, as long as they are not processed. These foods provide our bodies with all the protein, natural animal fats and omega 3 fatty acids, fibre, nutrients and vitamins that we need. And they help boost the immune system and keep internal inflammation out of our systems.

BB: Do you also design your client’s menu for breakfast and dinner?
RH: Yes, I offer full meal planning, shopping lists and recipes, both in person and online.

BB: How do you help your client maintain their health once their Primal Health Coach is over?
RH: That’s exactly it! I will educate the client so that they know it will never be over. Like I said before, once you go Primal, you never go back.

BB: After joining the Primal Health Coach, what do you expect your clients to feel?
RH: First and foremost, the clients have to have fun doing the exercises and are really motivated when they see that they need to spend less time exercising and more time resting. This is very liberating, as people often get stressed when personal trainers or gyms tell them that they need to work out as often as possible to see results. “The more the better” mantra is replaced by “less but right is better”. Then, once they adjust their metabolism, they will feel amazing constant energy levels. It’s hard to describe. I suggest you go Primal and see!
